DIY TIPS

Nothing tickles your creativity like the many challenges you encounter while working with different types of old and often rusty bikes. What, for instance, might the ugly contraption in image 1 be? Well, it's my camera tripod with telescope legs, the head inverted and a Ritchey stem mounted on it. I wrapped it in cloth to prevent scratching my bikes, and it works like a charm. It holds frames, complete bikes, or, as you see here, the parts that need painting. In image 2 is an assortment of random DIY tools that often come in handy. From left to right: Giant punch with a handlebar end as a grip; an 8 mm hex wrench inserted into a cut-off handlebar end and pressed in place with a thick chopstick; a length of steel pipe, good for punching out headset races; the ol' Shimano BB tool, improved with a 2" bolt to hold it in place while turning.
